As of today, there are thousands of brand new iPad owners with a whole new world ahead of them. While exploring the app store and discovering new and amazing apps on your own will be part of the overall iPad experience for you, we will be spending the next couple of days giving you some suggestions so that you won’t be groping around in the dark.
The first in our “New iPad Owner Starter Kit” consists of fantastic games that should be on everyone’s tablet. We’ve made a list of our favorite iPad games and we think you’ll like them too.
The-Walking-Dead-Logo

The Walking Dead ($4.99) – The game fits into a genre all its own. Players follow a storyline that unfolds within the pages of the famous comic book (or television show, depending on your understanding of the story). Players interact with characters in the game by asking and answering questions, but also must fight off zombie attacks and choose between life and death for important characters in the game. As you meet new people, your interactions with them will determine how they feel about you. If you answer incorrectly, it may mean that you’ve isolated yourself from the people you need the most. The first episode is free for a limited time and each additional one costs $4.99 through an in-app purchase. Or, you could buy episodes 2-5 for only $14.99. If you download episode one now, you’ll be saving five bucks off of the total price of the game.
The-Room-Logo

The Room ($1.99) – There is a reason that The Room won Apple’s iPad Game of The Year. It is an amazing puzzle game that takes players down an intricate and complex path that unlocks secrets while revealing new riddles. The graphics are amazing and the multifaceted puzzles are challenging enough to keep you occupied for hours without making you feel like you can’t figure it out. If you get stuck, there is a hint option that will help you get through to the next phase in the puzzle. And there are lots of phases to get through. Fans of mystery puzzle games will really get a kick out of this mind-blowing app.
The Battle of the Bulge ($9.99) – Fans of turn-based strategy games will have their hands full with this battle heavy game. Players take turns moving infantry, attacking enemies, and overthrowing enemy forces. Each move requires well thought out plans and detailed attacks. It is similar to the board game Risk, but includes the added benefit of being historically accurate with regards to the iconic Battle of the Bluge. Fans of history and strategy gaming will delight in the epic campaign they will encounter in this extraordinary app.
Midway Arcade ($0.99) – You may have already heard about Atari’s Greatest hits and how you can download as many as 100 games for $14.99. Sure, Atari’s classic Centipede and Missile Command are awesome on the iPad, but you’ll see from the list that you’re also going to be stuck with some fairly lame games, like Fun with Numbers (no offense, math nerds) and Concentration. If you really want a great set of games, go for the Midway Arcade classics, like Rampage, Spy Hunter, and Joust. For two dollars more, you can unlock six more games, including Gauntlet, NARC and Total Carnage. Maybe you don’t get 100 games, but at least Warner Bros. offers the cream of the crop instead of a handful of goodies mixed in with a bunch of rotten fruit.
SpellTower ($1.99) – For those of you just joining the iPad world, Words with Friends is old news. You don’t want your tech pals to think you are crusty. SpellTower is the new hotness and it is loads of fun. If you are a fan of word games, this one is fantastic. Players find words from a grid of letters on a Tetris style block removal board. You don’t have to stick with vertical, horizontal, or diagonal. As long as letters are touching on at least the corners, you can make a word and remove a section of letter blocks. In Debate Mode, players can challenge their friends to a friendly game of word finding using two iPads and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Hunger Games Adventure (Free) – Fans of story-based adventure games will really sink their teeth into the Hunger Games themed app that has players collecting food, killing Tracker Jackets and helping townsfolk in District 12 and beyond. The world of Katniss and her friends is large and difficult and you’ll be tasked with helping her save people, build houses and barter for goods in the Marketplace. This game is free to download, but players will eventually be put in a position to buy more game time. New iPad owners will quickly discover the world of “freemium” games and it wont be long before you understand that free rarely means free in the app world. If you’re going to spend your money somewhere, District 12 is a good place to do it.
Angry Birds Star Wars HD ($2.99) – No iPad game list would be complete without mentioning Angry Birds. Rovio has made a franchise out of the physics-based knock-down game, and the Star Wars licensed version is the developer’s newest release. It is, by far, the best version. You can’t walk down the street without seeing some Angry Birds-related products, but you may not actually know how the game works. Players must try to knock down a precarious structure that houses a handful of enemies. To do so, fling a feisty fowl at the building. In the Star Wars version, the iconic birds are outfitted with costumes relating to Han, Chewie, Leiah, Luke, and more. If you have always wanted to know what those puffy round birds and pigs are all about, try Angry Birds Star Wars for an epic good time.
PetWorld 3D: My Animal Rescue ($3.99) – There are plenty of simulation-games in the App Store for fans of the genre. So many, in fact, that it is hard to determine which are the best ones. If you like animal-related simulation games, then PetWorld 3d is right for you. It reminds me a little bit of Nintendo Cats and Nintendo Dogs. Players rescue, heal, and care for abandoned and lost pets. Once the little furry beasts are healthy enough, you can adopt them out. The money earned by getting the animals into new homes is used to buy toys, upgrade nurseries, and supply your rescue with much-needed supplies. This is no easy simulation. Players must work hard to keep their rescued pets in good shape. At the end of the day, you may have to say “good-bye” to a pet you’ve fallen for, just like in real life.
Paper Monsters ($0.99) – Side-scrolling adventure games are the staple of any gamer’s arsenal. Ever since home consoles came into existence, developers have been working to improve upon the genre. Crescent Moon Games just about perfected the coin-collecting art with its multilayered Paper Monster game. Not only do you run along a monster-filled, gap heavy obstacle course, but you will be transported directly into the background for additional adventuring. Plus, the coins you collect actually go to a good use. You can buy new outfits and accessories for your little paper dude. If you are a fan of traditional adventure games, like Super Mario Bros., then Paper Monster is a perfect addition for your new iPad.
Carcassonne ($9.99) – The iPad is ideal for digital board game playing. The only restriction is that 9.7-inches won’t fit all your Warhammer figures. While there are a lot of fantastic games based on traditional board games, Carcassonne is the best. This land grab game lets players build up their town by laying claim to areas with landmarks, which increases the individual’s score. It can be played with as many as five others in pass-and-play style gaming, or through local wi-fi connection and Internet multiplayer.
