Back in December when Motorola first introduced the two different sized Xyboard tablets it was promised that the devices would receive an Android 4.0.4 (ice cream sandwich) upgrade. Well summer is almost over and it appears that Motorola has finally made good on its promise, now offering the Android software update available for both 10.1 and 8.2 Xyboard Wi-Fi tablets.
What's New?
The 4.0.4 Android software update offers a number of enhancements including upgraded browser utility: faster rendering, zoom and pan and the ability to dismiss notifications with a simple swipe of the finger. Users will also enjoy the app launcher which will allow users to quickly uninstall any undesired app as well as gather more information on apps immediately.
The new system software allows users to type using their voice, and offers improved text input and spell-checking. Reading is easier as well thanks to the new 'Robot' typeface optimized for high resolution screens along with new resizable widgets.
The new software even allows for more versatile imaging capabilities, allowing users to take snapshots at full resolution while simultaneously shooting video. Additionally in conjunction with the new imaging capabilities users will be able to make pictures look their best via the redesigned gallery app equipped with photo editing software aimed offers features such as cropping, level editing, and red eye removal. Finally the software offers an extra level of security with Face Unlock that uses the front-facing camera in conjunction with facial recognition technology to recognize the users face.
The update is available to users over a Wi-Fi connection. Users who are unable to connect via Wi-Fi, or have their devices turned off when the notification arrives will see the notification as soon as the tablet becomes connected to Wi-Fi network.
Verizon has yet to announce when/if it will release an update for the Motorola XYBOARD tablet series. However, this is standard as carriers often spend extra time testing upgraded devices to be sure that they will not interfere with the rest of their network.
