The Nikon 1 J3 compact system camera follows on from the J2, bringing with it a smaller chassis, top dial and a brand new menu
Update: The Nikon 1 J3 release date has been set for 7 February 2013 and the price has been confirmed as £579 (though the actual street price is likely to be lower. The entry-level Nikon 1 S1 will also be in shops from 7 February with an RRP of £479. Stay tuned for full reviews.
The Nikon 1 J3 compact system camera is the maker's latest flagship CSC, following on (as you'd expect) from the Nikon 1 J1 and and Nikon 1 J2.
Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas alongside the entry-level Nikon 1 S1, the J3 has landed pretty quickly after the J2, which was only released in 2012. Does the J3 bring much more to the table? Well, yes, it does. Not only is it slightly smaller, but is also faster with a spruced up on-screen menu, plus a few other small but notable tweaks.
The 14.2MP snapper features the same aluminum build as the previous models, and feels sturdy enough although a fair bit lighter then the lenses it goes with (even the kit lens).
While it may not be the smallest CSC on the market (that would be the Pentax Q10), it's still one of the tiniest around.
The model we looked at had a hideous beige finish (seriously, who wants a beige camera?), but fear not - it's also available in black, white, silver and red.
Unlike the J2, the J3 has been equipped with a top-mounted dial to make it easier to switch between modes. The on-screen menu system has also been given a makeover, making it much clearer and easier to use with the minimal amount of steps for each function.
Packing Nikon's CX-format CMOS sensor, the J3 sports a faster hybrid autofocus than the previous models, which is something we'll be testing out properly as soon as we get a full review model in a T3 HQ.
It may not be a huge leap when compared to the J2, but the Nikon 1 J3 includes enough subtle improvements to raise Nikon's game in the compact system camera arena. We look forward to testing it out in full.
