Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed Apple's newest iteration of the popular handset, the iPhone 5 today. Confirm much of speculation that has amassed over the last month, the iPhone 5 will offer a slew of new features (including 4G LTE), but will come in a sleeker package being 18% thinner and 20% lighter than its predecessor.
Despite its smaller frame the iPhone 5 will offer a 4-inch display, with an increased 1135 x 640 resolution and 326 ppi. The iPhone will also offer increased performance running on iOS 6 and a A6 processor boasting twice the CPU speed and twice the graphics performance of the iPhone 4S. During the event Apple stated literally everything you do on iPhone 5 will be almost twice as fast the iPhone 4S.
In addition to being more powerful the A6 processor is going to be smaller and more energy efficient than its predecessor, which plays a large in the iPhone 5's impressive battery life. Today Apple announced that the new handset will offer increased battery life estimating around 8 hours of web browsing on LTE, 10 on Wi-Fi and 10 hours of video or 40 hours of music playback.
The new smartphone also will house and 8-megapixel camera that will offer 1080p video capture, dynamic low-light mode and a 40% image capturing. Apple has also introduced a new panoramic mode, not to mention that the faster A6 processor will help greatly reduce noise in pictures.
The iPhone 5 is surely set to be an impressive device that will offer excellent web browsing, and full social networking functionality. It almost raises the question; do casual users still need notebooks? While many of us look to our notebooks to run much more intensive applications, those who merely surf the web and chat with their friends via Facebook, may come to find devices like the iPhone 5 a suitable replacement for the portable PCs.
It's hard to tell if we're looking at the catalyst of new industry trend, but as the iPhone sets to release and we begin to see more comprehensive handsets we'll begin to get a better idea. The iPhone 5 is set to release this fall, hitting shelves Sept. 21, with pre-orders opening up Sept. 14.
